When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
We are seeing this passage come to fruition before our eyes. One of the aspects that we see this is in our governmental leaders. If you look at the states with conservative governors, we see much more prosperity and less crime. If you look at the states with progressive governors, you see oppression, more regulation, higher taxes, more crime and extreme poverty.
California is a perfect example of this. We see how leftist, authoritarian governmental leadership actually create oppression. It’s literally like a third world country out here. You could start out in the wealthiest part of town, drive 2 minutes down the road, and then see extreme poverty unlike anything you could imagine being in the United States of America.
Proverbs 29:2 is quite prophetic about the state of California, as the people here are literally groaning under the strain of the high cost of living, high taxes and extreme regulations. Now, we are experiencing an extreme case of this in response to COVID-19, as Governor Gavin Newsom has literally shut down the entire state, and now going so far as to close indoor church services, ban singing during outside services and even ban in-home Bible studies. Not only is the un-Constitutional, but this is pure tyranny and illegal behavior by our governor.
It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.
This is where it comes down to how we are to respond to our governmental leaders, especially with how our system is setup here in America. We are the government, electing our officials and having a say in the direction of our company. Unfortunately, pietist pastors like John MacArthur make the claim that we should submit to the government in virtually all aspects, even if they are taking away our Constitutional Rights. What’s been shocking is that, historically, Pastor MacArthur has said that the only exception to disobeying the government is when they are commanding us to disobey God’s Word.
Well, here we are, with the Governor of California not allowing us to gather together to worship. God’s Word commands us to “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” (Hebrews 10:25) So now we have God commanding us to do something that our Governor is commanding us not to do. So who will we choose to submit to… God or Governor?
Unfortunately, John MacArthur’s Grace Community Church has submitted to Governor Newsom over God’s Word, choosing to not gather together and holding church services. This is not limited to JMac, but is rampant among the visible leadership of the Evangelical Church across this nation.
As Proverbs 16:12 reminds us, it’s an abomination for kings to do evil… so why are we submitting to evil?
