The first four of the Ten Commandments are:
Have no other gods before the one true God
Do not create any images or objects of worship (idols)
Do not take the Lord's name in vain (don't use His name casually or frivolously)
Remember and observe the Sabbath day
The central theme of these four commands is to remember God - to worship Him and give Him appropriate respect. Why is remembering God so important to a nation? Significantly, before He released the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites, God declared, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." (Ex. 20:2; also see Deut. 5:6)
Without remembering Him, specifically who He is and what He is lie, we have no foundation for what we call ethics. You see, God is the source of truth and of an understanding of right and wrong that corresponds to His character and the world He create. Put another way, He is the source of an understanding of ethics that aligns with reality, since He is the author of all that is.
People pay a price for pushing against reality, and therein we see the cost of living out of synch with God's most basic guidelines for life. G.K. Chesterton said it well: "No man can break any of the Ten Commandments. He can only break himself against them."
