Here in America we have this thing called the Constitution of the United States. In this document, our rights that are given to us by God are acknowledge and promised to be protected by the government. You see, the unique thing about our Founding Documents were that they restricted government, not the people.
So when the government began shutting down our economy and even closing churches, I was shocked at just how many pastors have been complying with the government. Think about it, our governmental leaders told us that we can no longer gather together on Sundays, and our pastors comply without the least bit of resistance! What does that say about the Christian leadership in America?
Then you have pastors like John MacArthur who don’t even know which governmental authorities to submit to. He claims that Romans 13 says that we have to submit to the government when it comes to COVID-19 shutdowns, so he starts off submitting to Governor Gavin Newsom in closing down, followed by submitting to President Donald Trump in reopening, and then submitting to a local judge who said to shutdown. This is madness if this is your interpretation of Romans 13!
So the question becomes, who do we submit to? In my opinion, we should be submitting to God and His Word first and foremost, and then followed by the Constitution of the United States of America. Pastor Greg Locke would agree, as he explains in this video from the other day:
You see, when the Bible commands us to “not (neglect) to meet together, as is the habit of some…” (Hebrews 10:25), we need to obey God over man. It doesn’t matter if the governor has a good excuse. We are commanded to not forsake the gathering together, so let’s not forsake the gathering together!
Then, when the Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” and then a government official attempts to restrict our right to freedom of religion, we submit to the Constitution, not the government official. Why? Well, when you take a look this logically, if the government implements a law that is unconstitutional, then that law is actually illegal. Thus, obeying that law would mean that we are actually submitting to criminal activity!
So, let’s take Pastor Greg Locke’s advice: Open up our churches! Pastors need to take a stand to obey God over man and to protect our Constitutional Rights to peaceably gather together to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
No King but King Jesus!
