We've got to honor those who have come before us and those who've been in our business since before we got here, but we also need to celebrate those who are here. Many of them are born and raised in this country, they became successful and maybe they're successful in movies, maybe they don't. But they're here.
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My father had two businesses and my grandfather had four. So I was brought up with a lot of knowledge of the business world. I'm not an academic by any means, but I can tell you the business world has changed and the movie business has changed. But I think we as Black folks have had to adapt to that and we've had to learn new tricks and new ways of doing things. We've had to think of new ways to get a job done. I think that's where a lot of our talent has come from. It's the way we learn to adapt, deal with problems and see things differently.
Van Peebles started focusing on his second passion, directing. He directed The Slaves of New York, a musical starring his wife, later to be known as Cicely Tyson. They also made What's Happening, Tiger Lily?, which he wrote. In 1977 he directed Panther, starring Halle Berry, and he went on to direct such movies as New York, New York.
