The epub specification includes the following additional requirements for content types. These requirements are not specified in the EPUB 2.0 specification, but are relevant for EPUB 2.0 standards-based digital book publishing . If the epub specification does not specify the behavior or validity of a particular content type, then the behavior or validity of that content type is implementation dependent.
The use of any required content type by an ebook is not a requirement, and an ebook that provides the required content type may use another type instead. In general, the epub specification has no requirements for the use of particular content types for publishing and consumption.
To read the mimetype file, the calling code should check the error code of the open() operation for EPUB_ERR_INVALID_MIME. If this error is returned, the user should attempt to manually read the file with an appropriate text editor and verify that it is an epub-uncompressed-metadata-mimetype file.
The mimetype file, written in plain text, is contained in the ZIP archive, and is named with the basename of the file that appears in the file list in the epub-container or as the root element in the zipfile. For example:
book.epub/book/9405a9ac-d9c9-4b5a-bea8-7ed6a4eb26b8/metadata/mimetype
Conditions on reading the mimetype file
When the.epub file is opened, the open() method of EpubData will read the mimetype file and return EPUB_STATUS_OK if the file has been successfully read.
Currently, epubcheck supports the open source epubvalidator and Microsoft's mscorlib libraries to validate an ePub. Library providers can register for free with epubcheck at github.com/epubcheck/epubcheck .
An OPF is represented as a ZIP archive, in which the root of the archive contains a generic OPF file. OPF documents include resources, such as images, fonts, and hyperlinks. This generic OPF file is a ZIP archive that contains the generic EPUB 2.0
