In the program management interview, it's common to be asked to estimate the completion date of the project. In this section of the questions, we've included a question that's typically asked at Google and Amazon interviews. Although we include it in this section, we suggest you keep a few in mind because you will be asked similar questions in the interview. Here are some tips:
Google typically has a strict 3-4-5 rule for estimating, where you can pick a rough estimation based on the the percentage of the project left. If you can give specific dates for each of the stages, say 95% of the work has been completed, then you can give an estimated date of the project, which is when you think 95% of the work will be done. Otherwise, it will be more like a rough guess.
Google prefers to give a range of time estimates. For example, if you said you're expecting the work to be done in 2-3 months and 3-4 months, you're better off saying you think the project will take 2-4 months.
Google tends to ask a lot of detail questions such as how are you going to implement a feature and how are you going to test it. If you're not comfortable answering a detailed question about your project, be honest but prepare an answer and/or ask questions to clarify. You can always ask for more information later. Focus on the overall concept of the project, not the details.
