Go Local is a global program for libraries that promotes local engagement in biodiversity research. It is a partnership between the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and libraries from more than 40 countries. Go Local began in 2005 with a pilot project in a handful of libraries. The Go Local program grew from there. In 2013, more than 60 libraries were participating in Go Local. As of March 2014, there were more than 17,000 digital copies of primary biodiversity literature available through the program. The NLM has sponsored more than 40 partner libraries since the program began.

Through interviews with Go Local project coordinators, an evaluation team sought to identify process characteristics that are critical for long-term sustainability of Go Local projects and to describe the impact that Go Local projects have on sponsoring institutions.

The interviews revealed that most Go Local project coordinators are optimistic about the sustainability of the Go Local projects. However, several interviewees acknowledged that there are potential threats to the sustainability of the Go Local projects, including loss of staff, lack of commitment from the institutional library, lack of institutional support and stability, and changes in the priorities of the sponsoring institution.
